Today we visited the Amafi Coast. There is no train access to the Amalfi, so we needed to catch the bus from Sorrento. The bus would take about 1.5 hrs to get from Sorrento to Amalfi, so we joined the queue at the bus stop, however we didn’t get on the first bus as it was full by the time we reached the front of the line. Unfortunately the next bus wasn’t for 1 hr but we did’t want to lose our spot in the line, so we had to stay in the queue in the sun for another hour. (So far from what we’ve seen of the public transportation options in Sorrento, I just can’t see how the system would cope during the peak/high season, as it’s barely coping in the off season…)
After waiting for another hour (we’d waited about 1.5 hrs by now) the next bus finally arrived and we we’re on our way to Amalfi sort-of. (As we were sick of waiting by now we caught the bus to Positano instead as we weren’t sure when the one to Amalfi would arrive and we just wanted to be on our way)
The road along the coast was very spectacular and was just like out of a James Bond movie. Sometimes there was only about 10 cms between the edge of the bus and road edge, which was also the edge of the cliff. When I come back, I’d like to hire a car and drive along this road, so I could stop at the many vantage points along the way.
After lots of twists and turns, we finally arrived in Positano, a nice seaside/cliffside village with bright coloured houses and also where I had my first Cannoli of our trip so far. The beach was small but the water was crystal clear with gentle waves lapping at the shore.
We then caught the next bus from Positano further down the coast to Amalfi. Amalfi was different to Positano as it didn’t really have a small seaside village feel about it, like Positano did. Still we wandered around the streets, bought a couple of souvenirs and had the nicest Gelato we’ve had so far on our trip (edit: up to and including Pozza).
We then caught the ferry back from Amalfi to Sorrento and got good views of the coast from the ocean.
We’re hoping to go visit Herculaneum and Capri tomorrow.
Ciao
