Sorrento is a very nice seaside town in southern Italy and we’ve had fantastic weather. It was sunny and about 25*C most days which made it perfect for exploring the town and surrounding region. This region of Italy is very famous for Lemons and most shops in Sorrento sell lemon themed items of some description, whether it be lemon drinks, lemon alcohol, lemon lollies, lemon cakes, lemon towels, lemon soap, lemon air fresheners and of course Lemons. Sorrento also has a lot of inlaid wood workers who have produced some very stunning pieces of work many of which are too big or fragile for me to bring home unfortunately.
So far we’ve found the people in Sorrento to be very friendly and easy going. The food is also nice and the prices are reasonable.
Today we left Sorrento to visit Pompei which was about 40 mins by train. When we arrived we took a 2hr guided tour(in English, 10 euros each) around the ruins, which I would highly recommended, as there are NO signs explaining what everything is. Our tour guide was about 70 yrs old, an archaeologist and was at times quite funny. Without him, we would have been wandering around the ruins not knowing what we were looking at.
After our tour ended we revisited some of the sites we’d toured around and just strolled for a couple of hours. It was really interesting to see a 2000 yr old town in such a well preserved state considering the age and to see how advanced the people of the time were in terms of hygiene, plumbing, heating and just some really small commonsense ideas such as the small hole in rocks on the side of the road used to tie your horses to, and the stepping stones in the street so people didn’t need to walk in the sewage and other muck which was generally running down the street.
After an exhausting day walking around the ruins (we had gotten a little bit sunburnt), we were very surprised to be greeted by a nice, new modern air conditioned train for our journey home.
Tomorrow we’re hoping to go to the Amalfi Coast
Ciao
